The Big

    Little Moments ...
                   ... Big Magic

You can make a difference – just be yourself.

One of the biggest misconceptions about being a Big Brother or Big Sister is that it means being a perfect role model.  What it really means is being a friend, and bringing a little magic into your life and that of a child.

Think back to when you were a kid.  Who was it that brought magic into your life just by being there?  Who do you always remember with a smile?  Maybe it was an aunt who taught you to cook, or a neighbor who let you help him fix his car.  Or maybe, it was someone who just included you in everyday activities of life because it was fun- for both of you.

Imagine a child’s eyes lighting up the first time he or she walks into a baseball stadium or rides bikes with you on the bike trail.  Not only can you be there when it happens, but you can be the reason it did.

Being a “Big” means being yourself and sharing the best part of yourself with a friend.  Each of us had a special person who opened doors and widened new horizons.  As a Big, you can do the same for a child.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Sioux Empire is a Sioux Falls-based organization that helps children reach their maximum potential through mentoring relationships with adult volunteers.  BBBS has volunteer opportunities to fit any lifestyle or schedule.

Being a Big is one of the best decisions you’ll ever make.  It means a chance to gain a new friend and see the world – and be seen – through fresh new eyes.  No matter where you are in life right now, being a Big will make it better.

Who is a Big?  (volunteers age 16 & up)

A Big is a volunteer who spends time with his or her Little Brother or Little Sister a minimum of 2 to 4 hours a month.  Volunteers are asked to make a minimum of a one-year commitment.  A criminal record check, department of motor vehicles record check, references and personal interview will be conducted prior to approval into the program.

Big Brothers can be matched with a Little Brother and Big Sisters can be matched with either a Little Brother or Little Sister.  Matches participate in activities both the Big and Little enjoy.  You will personally schedule activities according to you and your Little’s schedule.  In addition to the fun you and your Little Brother or Little Sister will have together, Big Brothers Big Sisters sponsors events such as fishing, annual picnic, art classes, scavenger hunts, and much more.  Free tickets to sporting and entertainment events are also available.

Some activities matches might share include:

  • Watching movies
  • Bicycling in the park
  • Sitting and talking or even running errands
  • Make a craft together
  • Wash the car together
  • Feed the birds
  • Teach him/her a new word
  • 181 Activities

Big Couples:

Big Couple’s are someone who gives a child an excellent model of a loving, healthy relationship.  Big Couples function the same as individually matched Bigs and share the fun activities with their Little Brother together.  Husbands and wives are typically matched with a Little Brother.

Support:

Matches are supported by case specialists who monitor matches monthly for the first year and quarterly thereafter.  Case specialists are available to offer support and guidance.
